Interactive Workshop – Rebooting Your Muse
9 am to noon: Writer’s block can sneak up on you at any time. You may be burned out, distracted or just plain old tired. Darcy will lead you on a fun interactive workshop to give you the tools you need to reboot your muse and clear the writer’s block. Bring pen/paper or your laptop and be prepared to get unstuck, revitalized, and excited about your writing. Don’t worry – we have coffee! The workshop will be followed by tips and tricks on how to get unstuck, from the Canadian master of suspense, Jonas Saul. A writing assignment, to be completed before Sunday, will be given out.
Noon to 1 pm – break time
1 pm to 3:30 pm: Free time! Explore the area, go for a walk on Whiffen Spit or use what you’ve learned and go back to your room and write up a storm. Or you can join your hosts and fellow writers on a wildlife ocean cruise. ($106 incl. taxes/person – must be pre-booked) Adventures by HIP will take you on this two-and-a-half hour Ocean Wildlife Tour out into the open waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. With a little luck and a sharp eye you’ll soon be spotting Humpback Whales, Orcas (resident and transient), Minke Whales, Pacific White-Sided Dolphins, Sea Otters, Harbour Porpoises, California Sea Lions, Stellar Sea Lions, Sea Otters, Harbour Seals, Elephant Seals, Bald Eagles, and many more interesting species. It’s time for you to sit back, relax and enjoy the amazing views.
3:30 pm to 6 pm: Back on dry land. More writing or exploring time. Do what works best for you.
6 to 8 pm: It’s BBQ time! Rain or shine, it’s a balcony BBQ** with burgers, smokies, salads, and wine*! Take the time to recap your day, what you’ve written and what you experienced with your fellow writers. Expect a casual night with great conversation. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep as there is more to come Sunday!
Sunday – May 19, 2019
Self-Publishing and Keeping Your Readers Engaged
9 am to 10:30 am: It’s time to share what you’ve written! Each participant is invited to read a portion of what they wrote the day before. Five minutes will be allotted per share, plus five minutes of feedback from the group, Darcy, and Jonas. Not to worry – there’s more Q&A on Sunday evening.
10:45 am to noon: Info session – Self-publishing in 2019. Take notes and learn what’s new in the world of self-publishing and why it’s not a dirty word anymore. You’ll learn how to set up your accounts online, what you need to do before self-publishing, and how to find a team to work with on your book. Much of the information in this info session also applies to what needs to be done before you look for an agent or a publisher.
Noon to 1 pm: lunch break
1 – 2 pm: Jonas Saul takes you on a step-by-step info session on how he made it as a self-published author, how he kept and grew his readership, and how you can increase your earnings exponentially by creating great books year after year.
2:15 to 3:30 pm: Tension, conflict, curiosity. These three things keep the reader engaged and reading more. In this workshop, Darcy will take you through the reasons you need to take your reader on an emotional rollercoaster. There will be an on-the-spot assignment which you are welcome to share with the class.
3:45 pm to 5 pm: Before the day is over, Jonas Saul will lead an info session on creating tension in your writing and give examples of how he does it. After selling over 2,000,000 books, you can bet he has this one down pat!
7 pm to 9 pm: Q & A by the fire (inside if it’s raining). Bring your favourite beverage and join Darcy and Jonas for an informal Q & A session where you can ask all the questions you didn’t know you had. There’s more to come on Monday, so make sure you get a good night’s sleep!
Monday – May 20, 2019
Making Yourself Accountable
9 am to 10:30 am: Goal setting and accountability are important in order to succeed as a writer. Jonas will take you through how he keeps himself accountable, and how to carefully choose your goals daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. Then Darcy will guide you through a quick and easy way to prioritize your goals. Once your list is complete, it’s time to make yourself accountable to yourself, your readers and the people who support you. In this session you will write out five things you promise to be accountable for, date it, sign it, and share it.
10:30 am to 11 am: Pack up and check out.
*This is a 19+ retreat. If you prefer not to drink wine, please let us know if you’d like an alternative beverage.
